TRUE community spirit was what made this year's Rio inspired Ulverston carnival parade a huge success.

St Mary's Hospice corporate fundraiser for the hospice and carnival committee chairman, Bob Qazi said he couldn't thank everyone enough for making it such a special event.

He said its success was without a doubt down to a great community spirit and everyone pulling together to make it such an enjoyable day for all.

Taking inspiration from Rio de Janeiro, carnival capital of the world, this year’s theme for Ulverston was Brazil and the Olympics due to be held there.

St Mary’s Hospice is delighted that following on from last year, all proceeds from this year’s carnival collections will go to the them.

Rio might be one of the biggest carnivals in the world, but Ulverston Hospice Carnival can hold its head high as it just gets bigger and better each year.

The committee expected more than 8,000 people to come along to this wonderfully vibrant event.

Mr Qazi believes that many may have packed into the town on Saturday.

He said: "It has really gone well and the town was absolutely packed. Then everyone packed into Ford Park. It's great looking around and seeing everyone smiling and enjoying their day.

"I think the weather forecast may have put a few people off going, but luckily there was only one big shower.

"There was so much effort made by everyone who took part in the parade. It was amazing. To name a few, the LVA float had a young group from the South Lake's Rock School, Furness Building Society had Becki Fishwick singing on their's, and Sir John Barrow School walked along with some great displays and dancing.

"Everyone who took part was amazing.

"It's been a great family atmosphere and there was a real sense of community spirit from everyone.

"Sadly, the dance competition had to be called off due to the weather forecast. We spoke with the dance co-ordinator in the morning and it was decided that it was for the best.

"I would like to thank the committee for all their hard work, including Wendy Barry, Phil Kitson, Jeff Johns, and Martin Osborne.
"Also, thanks to all the volunteers on the day."
