ULVERSTON town clock has been making noise for all the wrong reasons after a change in chime riled up residents.

The bell tower atop the Lloyds Bank in Ulverston has been sounding out the hours for generations of townsfolk.

However, a change in the sound of the chime has left residents puzzled, and asking 'why the sudden change?'.

At a meeting of the Ulverston Town Council last week, the issue was addressed by councillors and the town clerk.

The problem stemmed from an error in the clock's digital mechanism, resulting in the clock chiming through the night, starting on the week of June 12.

When the repair staff called in by the district council went to fix the times of the clock ringing, they discovered that one of the speakers installed had been disconnected.

This was subsequently amended, meaning two speakers rang out when it came for the clock to chime.

This resulted in confusion, and a certain degree of consternation, among locals, upset at the new "mechanical" sound of the tower.

Jayne Kendall, Ulverston town clerk said the complaint has been registered with SLDC, and the clock's chime will be reverted back to normal as soon as possible.

She said: "I've been in touch with them, [telling them] this needs looking at - people are very unhappy."

SLDC were approached for comment.

The clock’s movement frame of cast iron dates back to 1845. It was made by Roberts, Fothergill and Dobinson of the Globe Works Manchester.

An electric drive was fitted in 1977, with only some of the original components retained.
