SUPPORTIVE services across South Cumbria are breaking down barriers for breastfeeding mums.

South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) is rolling out its Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme following a successful trial in Ulverston, where various cafes and restaurants have been involved. While the right to breastfeed in any public place is protected by law, some women fear others' reactions.

Alison Coward, SLDC public protection officer, said: “Mums can’t always predict when they will next need to feed their baby and the NHS recommends that a baby is fed whenever they show signs of hunger, so mums need to be ready wherever they are.

“However, concerns about negative public attitudes have been identified as one of the main barriers to breastfeeding. For a new mum, breastfeeding in public can be a daunting task, but the more support communities can offer, the easier it becomes.”

To join, business owners sign a declaration agreeing to support mums by offering a seat and a glass of water where possible. They will be given a sticker to display and information to share with employees and volunteers.
