A BIG crowd of people gathered in the centre of Ulverston for an Easter Story passion play - understood to be a first for the market town.

Families flocked to Market Place this Easter Saturday to watch the cast and musicians from a collaboration of Ulverston and Millom churches chart the final days of Jesus' life and share the messages of the Easter.

The open air play actually began with an Easter Sunday scene of Jesus' empty tomb - the end of the Easter story. Scenes followed of Palm Sunday, the last supper with Jesus and his disciples, the betrayal of Jesus and his trial. The crowd then watch on as Jesus was led to the cross for the crucifixion.

The sombre mood was then lifted by the joyous scenes of the resurrection. The tomb is found empty and Jesus appears to his disciples, a scene accompanied by uplifting vocals and instrumentals.

The cast from Ulverston's Emmanuel, Croftlands, Parish and Methodist churches, and Millom Community Church, were joined by musicians from Emmanuel and Lakes Gospel Choir.

The passion play was co-directed by Mark Callaghan and George Brettle, and they congratulated everyone involved.

Mr Callaghan, of Croftlands Church, who also depicted a Roman soldier in the play, said: "This was the first passion play for Ulverston. The response has been fantastic. We are delighted with the turn out ."

Amy Fidler, of Ulverston, attended with her family and said: "It's a wonderful thing. It was very ambitious to put this on in Ulverston, but there has been a fantastic turnout and this is very positive for the all churches to have got together.

"We should feel free to celebrate Easter and share the message."

Jason Haine, of Millom Community Church said: "It was a great reception. The crowd were amazing.

"It was important for Millom Community Church to be involved and branch out. Quite a few people came through from Millom to watch. This has gelled the link between the churches."
