Call to start year with fitness plan

COUCH potatoes are being urged to get into shape this New Year by mixing aerobics with martial arts.
Karobics sessions start in Ulverston on Thursday.
The programme provides a fun way to shed the extra festive pounds by combining non-contact kickboxing with upbeat dance music.
Instructor Tony Taylor says it is a great way to beat the January blues and relieve stress.
Part of the session involves kick pads and punch bags and there is lots of resistance-related work which is great for toning the body.
To finish there is a section on stretching to help increase flexibility and aid relaxation.
Mr Taylor says that you do not have to be fit or interested in martial arts to enjoy the classes because they have been designed to meet everyone’s needs, regardless of fitness levels.
He explained that many people often abandon their new year resolutions to get fit because they expect to see drastic changes immediately.
But he stresses that karobics classes will help people settle into a routine that they can keep to.
Mr Taylor said: “Exercise should be enjoyed with lots of variation if we are to make it part of our weekly routine. What tends to happen is we do things too intensely in the beginning, especially in the New Year.
“We expect big changes quickly, get disappointed with the results and give up. Instead we should take a more laid-back approach, making small changes over a long period of time.
“By setting realistic achievable goals, it is easier to keep it up in the long term.
“Everyone seems to lead such busy lives that they forget about the most important thing, themselves. You should consider yourself important and make the time.”
Karobics sessions will be held every Thursday at Ulverston Victoria High School from 7.30pm.
Self-defence karate lessons for all ages start tomorrow, also at UVHS, from 6pm
