LOUD AND PROUD: Acting Ulverston town crier Peter Winston reads the Lancashire proclamation at the Market Cross in Ulverston yesterday to mark Lancashire Day

Despite the county boundary change in 1974, strong ties remain to the old Lancashire north of the Sands, which included Barrow, Ulverston, Coniston, Broughton, Cartmel, Dalton, Askam and Ireleth.

On November 27, in 1295, the first elected representatives from Lancashire were called by King Edward I to attend Parliament in Westminster.

Acting Ulverston town crier Peter Winston read the Lancashire Proclamation at Market Cross at 11am.

Mr Winston said: “I was born in Westmorland, so I never actually regarded myself as a Lancastrian. I was asked by the Friends of Real Lancashire to read the proclamation, which is a standard thing they have done on that day since 1995.”
