Future of lake to be shaped by ‘game’

KEY decision makers from across the region will tomorrow play a novel planning game to help map out ideas for the future development of Windermere.
Described as being similar to Top Trumps, Building Futures will see participants creating a potential plan for the town using a hand of planning-inspired cards.
It is hoped tomorrow’s session at the Low Wood Hotel, Windermere, supported by the Lake District National Park Authority, will get organisations to talk to each other about how to bring their ideas on future development to fruition.
Steve Radcliffe, LDNPA director of planning and partnerships, said the event was an innovative way to tackle the big issues involved in town planning.
He said: “The lake is one of the nation’s greatest and most treasured assets. Its future needs to be carefully planned, particularly where visitor attractions are concerned.
“We hope the event will be the start of a new approach to agreed thinking and action around the lake.”
Representatives from Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Tourism, Cumbria Vision, English Lakes Hotels, Windermere Lake Cruises and the Furness Railway Trust are among those taking part.
The game itself has been developed by the Royal Institute for British Architects and was launched in January.
It has already helped those involved in planning in the Northamptonshire town of Daventry to identify a way to redevelop the town centre.
RIBA’s Tamsie Thompson said Building Futures was as easy to play as Monopoly.
She said: “It’s a fantastic way to engage people and get them thinking about one of the UK’s most beautiful natural areas.”
