A NEW energy plant could be built to power a prestigious pharmaceutical operation if planners give a proposed scheme a green light.

Formal permission is being sought for the construction of an energy centre on brownfield land at GlaxoSmithKline, in North Lonsdale Road, in Ulverston.

Those in charge at the firm are also seeking to demolish an existing building housing a boiler and a steam generator as part of the application.

If approved, the process would be completed in a phased manner with the new building completed before the existing centre was torn down.

A report on the matter states: "The new facility will render all utilities in the existing Energy Centre redundant.

"It is therefore proposed, as part of this application, to decommission and demolish the existing Energy Centre and associated structures."

Planning chiefs at South Lakeland District Council will assess the application before deciding whether to allow it to go ahead.
