Ulverston Firefighter Simon ready to tackle peak challenge
Last updated at 08:14, Thursday, 05 July 2012
HAVING been a firefighter for 13 years, Simon Rodger is no stranger to pushing himself to the brink of his physical and mental capabilities.
So this weekend, when he tackles the gruelling 42-peak Bob Graham Round, he should have plenty of reserves to draw on.
Mr Rodger, of Canal Street, Ulverston, is embarking on the famed 28,500-foot ascent to raise money for Sandside Lodge School.
With his wife Vikki working there, the 32-year-old is acutely aware of the school’s importance to its 80-odd students – all who have special needs.
A keen fell runner and cyclist, Mr Rodger – who is based at the Barrow fire station on Phoenix Road – has been training specifically for the challenge for the last five months.
He said: “I’m as prepared as I can be.
“Unfortunately, I think I’m going to be running through the clouds most of the day. So I’m a bit disappointed about that, but it will keep me cool.”
Mr Rodger will have a 10-person strong entourage to help him when he sets off from Keswick at 10pm on Friday, with his aim to finish the loop just 23 hours later.
That will include two pacesetters to ensure he does not burn himself out too early in the run, or drag his feet and risk missing the unofficial 24-hour deadline.
Anyone who wishes to sponsor Mr Rodger on his run can drop in to Barrow fire station and fill out a sponsorship form.
