OUTRAGED residents have blasted Buckinghamshire County Council after a bungled traffic calming scheme had to be re-installed.

The speed bumps in Ledborough Lane, Beaconsfield, were installed as part of a planning requirement for a new residential development by Charles Church Developments Ltd of Northaw, Hertfordshire.

The county council carried out an assessment of the layout against the approved drawings and found that differences existed.

The controversial speed bumps have come under fire recently from town and district councillor Graham Smith (Con, North Ward).

He said: "The new speed bumps are an improvement on the last set and this is the least worst option.

"The last lot were just thrown on the road rather than constructed.

"I hope this is the last piecemeal works they do before we have a traffic survey in the town, otherwise we will have more of this sort of inappropriate measure forced upon us."

Work on the road began last Monday and was completed on Friday.

Each of the speed bumps on the road was replaced and a new road surface applied.

Cllr Rodney Royston, the county council's cabinet member for Planning and Transportation, said: "It is unfortunate that the traffic calming speed cushions had to be reconstructed, but it is important that all works of this nature are carried out to the highest standards."

A spokesman for Charles Church Developments Ltd said: "A consultant and a specialist contractor, both approved by Bucks County Council were appointed to carry out the work.

"Charles Church has worked closely with the council to ensure that the work will be effective in terms of traffic calming and acceptable to residents."
