Thug who beat girlfriend in Barrow street attack is jailed

A VICIOUS Barrow thug who ripped out his girlfriend’s hair and left her with a broken rib has been jailed for 18 months.

Preston Crown Court heard yesterday that Michael Johnson subjected Sharon Greer to a sustained attack and kicked her in the head as she lay on the ground in Lindal Street, Barrow.

Johnson, 35, of Roding Green, Walney, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The court was told that the pair had been in a relationship for two years prior to the violence which took place on January 12 when Johnson visited her home.

Mr Jeremy Lasker, prosecuting, said everything seemed pleasant during the early part of the evening, but Johnson became upset and decided to leave. He shouted outside towards the house and Ms Greer.

Mr Lasker added that she went outside and tried to hit Johnson with something in her hand, but failed. The defendant grabbed her hair, dragged her into the street, threw her to the ground and kicked her once to the head.

Johnson then walked into the house, leaving Ms Greer on the ground.

Mr Lasker said that after she came to and went back into her home, Ms Greer was subjected to a violent and sustained assault, during which she was punched and kicked a number of times.

Following his arrest, Johnson claimed to police that Ms Greer had come out of the house swinging for him and had struck him. He accepted he had grabbed her by the hair and thrown her to the floor. He denied punching and kicking her.

Mr Richard Bennett, defending, said Johnson had got upset at the time because his state of mind was affected by alcohol.

He said: “He says she had threatened him with a knife before the incident escalated outside. He says she had gone outside with the knife.

“Of course, there’s no justification for what happened subsequently.”

Judge Christopher Cornwall told Johnson: “This is a bad assault and must be met with immediate imprisonment.”

He also made a three-year restraining order, banning him from contacting Ms Greer.
