DETECTIVES investigating a major raid believe the offenders may have travelled from outside Cumbria.
Thieves made off with £3,600 in cash and £1,000 of postage stamps after breaking in to Clinton Cards, in Portland Walk, Barrow, some time between 6pm on Sunday and the early hours of Monday.
The culprits forced their way into the store before using power tools to open the safe – which was left empty.
In August, thieves broke in to Greggs Bakery in Dalton Road, Barrow, and stole a safe containing around £4,000 in cash – an offence which detectives have said is similar in nature.
Detective Sergeant Mike Wallace, of Barrow CID, said enquiries were ongoing.
He said: “We are open-minded regarding an out-of-force crime. It is similar to the Greggs burglary but there is nothing to suggest they are linked but there are similar circumstances – as well as looking at local enquiries.”
There are around 400 Clinton Card stores across the country and Christmas is one of the busiest times in the year for the retailer.
Anyone with information, or who witnessed suspicious activity in the Portland Walk area overnight on Sunday into Monday morning, is asked to phone Barrow CID on 101 or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
No-one from Clinton Cards was available for comment when the Evening Mail went to press.
