Teen driver who crashed into Barrow bingo club ‘wasn’t a boy racer’

A TEENAGE driver who crashed into a bingo hall denied he was being a “boy racer”.
Daniel William McNarry’s Citroen Saxo crashed into the Apollo Bingo and Social Club after witnesses claimed he was racing a friend between traffic lights along Hindpool Road.
Appearing at Furness Magistrates’ Court yesterday, the 19-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without due care and attention, relating to the incident on September 11 last year.
Mrs Lisa Hine, prosecuting, told the court that a witness had seen a blue car – driven by McNarry – and a white car at a set of traffic lights, before both took off at speed when the lights changed.
She said: “The witness said the cars started to rev their engines and set off at speed, before the cars went round a bend and the defendant’s car crashed into a bingo hall.
“Both cars were equally responsible for the accident. The driver of the white car has already been prosecuted.”
The court heard that McNarry, an apprentice electrician, had been go-karting with friends before the crash.
Following his arrest, in police interview he disputed driving at excessive speeds and said he was only driving at 30mph.
Mrs Jane Tunn, defending, said her client disputed the claims that he was racing.
She said: “This must seem like the usual boy racers on the one way system.
“He doesn’t accept the full facts of the Crown’s case. Mr McNarry said his car was an old banger and the revving noise was just the engine idling along.
“He thinks it might be that he pulled away a bit quicker than the witness.
“He was pulling in to the left hand lane, from the right.
“He remembers looking in his rear view mirror and then becoming aware that the car had hit something.
“He thinks that he’s been looking in his mirror when he has clipped the kerb and that has caused him to crash.”
McNarry, of Westway, Barrow, was given five penalty points on his driving licence. He was also fined £240 and ordered to pay a £24 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Its well known that all the youngsters drive very fast around there with a disregard for anyone and everyone. They have an ego as big as Humpty Dumpty's head. Why don't the council give these rat racers a place to speed around so they can do what they want. Keeps them off the streets and safer all round if they use it.
