At least 25 schools in South Cumbria and Millom will be hit by the industrial action by members of the National Union of Teachers.

The NUT walkout is over pay, pensions and conditions, following unsuccessful talks with education secretary, Michael Gove.

The union is taking action in response to changes such as introductions of performance-related pay structure.

The NUT has around 3,000 members in Cumbria. The Department for Education says the strike will damage children’s learning.

Have your say

There are so many people who believe that teaching is an easy profession, where teachers are rewarded with long holidays and a short working day. Interestingly, they are not queueing up to take on the role. In fact teachers are leaving at a scary rate. I wonder why?

I'm sorry to J Jones for saying what they see as the obvious but get in the real world!! I was in education for the last 15 years and all you say in defence is true!! teachers seem to think they are so badly done by but honestly do not have a clue sometimes. You have such an easy life yet always feel so hard done by, bless your cotton socks xx
