Teachers’ delight at A grades

AMID claims GCSE English exams have been harshly marked, Millom School is celebrating bucking the national trend.
In contrast with a host of angry headteachers across the country, who say their pupils have been unkindly marked, Millom School headteacher Ian Smith was delighted with his students’ performance. The school’s A* to C pass rate in English rose from 64 per cent last year to 71 per cent.
Across the country 63.9 per cent of GCSE English entries got at least a C grade, compared to 65.4 per cent last summer.
Mr Smith said: “This reflects the endeavours of the students, but in particular the significant improvement in leadership and teaching within the department.
“The English results have come as no surprise to those of us who work with the students as they know about the quality of teaching and application of students we have here.”
Paul Baggaley, Executive Head of English and Maths at Millom School, praised his students after the seven per cent increase in English.
He said: “The results are fantastic and it is testament to the effort and application of the students.
“They’ve been absolutely fantastic all year and they’ve achieved results that they can be proud of and that give them a bright future.”
Overall Millom School maintained last year’s all time high pass rate of 59 per cent of students achieving five A* to C grades, including Maths and English.
Professor Colin Richards, chairman of governors, said: “Once again Millom School students and teachers have shown what is possible given hard work and commitment. Well done everyone, including Mr (Ian) Smith.”
Among the schools top performers were Molly Burn and Megan Hulse, both 16 and from Millom.
Molly achieved four As, three Bs and a distinction, while Megan got two A*s, four As, a B and a distinction.
Molly said: “I was really surprised when I saw my results. I got Bs in my mocks so I was really happy to get the As.”
Megan added: “The teachers said I had done well but I was really happy when I actually saw the results.”
Also among the high achievers were Candice Mitchell, 16, from Millom, with one A*, four As and two Bs and Heather McCartney, 16, from Millom, with one A*, five As and two Bs.
