Submarine section move expected to cause Barrow road disruption

MOTORISTS travelling near Barrow shipyard this week may experience minor delays due to a series of planned road movements by BAE Systems.

A large section of the fifth Astute class submarine, Anson, is due to be transported from the New Assembly Shop, to the Devonshire Dock Hall (DDH) on Wednesday morning.

At around 9.15am on Wednesday December 18, the ‘forward end construction’ – the large section of the front of the submarine – will be moved from the main shipyard gates on Bridge Road to the Devonshire Dock Hall gate on North Road. The movement is due to last around 15 minutes.

In preparation for the move, the ‘scheuerle’ (heavy duty transporter) will travel along North Road and Bridge Road on Monday at around 9.15am, and Tuesday at around 11am. Each movement will take around 15 minutes.

On Thursday next week, the empty transporter will again travel along the same route at around 9.15am before ‘unit 3’ of Anson, which will eventually house the forward engine room, is transported to the Devonshire Dock Hall. This will take place at around 2.15pm.

There will be no disruption to parking in the area however there may be minor disruption to traffic in these areas for short periods.
