STUDENTS have produced a commemorative stone to mark the history and closure of their school.

Pupils designed and created a stone pathway to celebrate 30 years of Thorncliffe School in Barrow. The secondary school is due to close this summer to form Furness Academy with Parkview and Alfred Barrow schools.

Ten Year 11 students worked on the project with Dean Humpage from Local Paving Ltd. The path runs across a grassed area in front of the Thorncliffe’s Teaching and Learning Centre.

The decorative stone circle centre piece features the words: “To commemorate Thorncliffe School officially from 1979-2009.”

The Thorncliffe badge and the names of the students and all those involved in the project are engraved on the stone.

The materials were donated by building supplier BSB. The centrepiece stone was engraved by Dave Cooper of The Stone Workshop.

The pupils have been working with Mr Humpage as part of the Certificate in Personal Effectiveness on the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network course.

Rachael Ward, an ASDAN teacher at Thorncliffe, said: “Dean has been part of the Cumbria Business Education Consortium scheme since January this year and we were delighted when he offered his services to the school. It’s good to see the pupils getting involved with the private sector and learning new skills to broaden their horizons.”

Have your say

My mistake sorry, you are of course correct. We merged with the Tech a little later.

Actually it was Holker street who joined with Victoria in 1973 not the Tech.
