Speed limit calls for ‘death trap’ road

COUNCILLORS have called for a lower speed limit in Haverigg in a bid to tackle speeding motorists.

At a meeting of Millom Town Council on Wednesday, councillors were told speeding drivers and parking problems were making Main Street hazardous to cross at peak times.

Councillors heard that more and more residents were parking cars outside their homes and shops which was making crossing difficult – a problem made worse by an increase in speeding motorists.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Janice Brown, urged councillors to back her calls for a pedestrian crossing and reduced speed limit in a bid to tackle the problems.

She said: “Between noon and 12.20pm it is horrendous.

“Do you think we could get a crossing?

“It is bad enough for an able-bodied person but last week I had to stop traffic and help three old ladies cross.”

The speed limit in the village is 30mph but Cllr Brown said drivers had been seen breaking the limit at peak times.

She added: “Parking is bad but you can’t stop business.

“I just wondered if something can be said to highways to ask them to meet with us – I really would like them to come and see it.”

Cllr Brown’s calls for a lower speed limit and pedestrian crossing were backed by Haverigg resident Councillor Felicity Wilson.

Cllr Wilson said: “The traffic in Main Street is horrendous – the volume and the speed.

“It’s a death trap.

“There is a blind bend – if you look both ways, within a snap a car comes whizzing by.

“I would support Cllr Brown.”

Have your say

...She said: “Between noon and 12.20pm it is horrendous."

The heavy traffic at this time of day can only be staff from HM Prison Haverigg who are rushing to get home for lunch.

This is not a new thing, it has been the same for years. I'm surprised nobody has been killed or badly injured.

They are like racing cars on a starting-grid!
