South Cumbria people let love guide their charity pledges

BREAST cancer survivors across South Cumbria are set to benefit from more than £11,000 of investment in a scheme to help support them through recovery.
It comes following the success of the Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s Valentine’s Appeal, which takes place throughout the first three weeks of February and has this year raised more than £20,000.
The annual event is the biggest fundraiser for Rosemere, the local cancer charity for South Cumbria and Lancashire.
Collections and events were held over the last year in Barrow, Ulverston, Grange, Ambleside and Windermere.
Anne Sweeney, area fund-raising co-ordinator, said: “It’s been really successful, I’m just delighted.
“It’s fantastic that people are so kind.”
Among this year’s success stories are the Drunken Duck in Ambleside, which raised £500 through an afternoon tea and jewellery swap and Crooks Suzuki in Barrow, whose tea party and online auction made £151.96.
More than 38 volunteers across the area raised £1,920.02 through organised collections and generous supporters from across the area sent in donations totalling almost £1,400.
Ms Sweeney added: “It’s not just about the money we’ve raised, it’s about the profile of the charity and the way that’s been raised as a result.
“So many more people know who we are now, and what we do.”
The latest group of local patients set to benefit from Rosemere’s work is breast cancer survivors.
The charity is paying £11,361.70 of its Valentine’s Appeal total to fund a pilot project providing a 16-week rehabilitation and recovery programme to help people manage their daily life and return to work.
