South Cumbria fundraisers dive into Red Nose Day fun

MADCAP antics and competitive challenges across Furness will help to raise thousands of pounds for Comic Relief.

Red Nose Day got off to an early start in Barrow this week with some bonkers activities, including a freezing fundraising stunt at Furness College on Wednesday.

Students took it in turns to sit in a bath of ice in return for sponsorship. The brave bunch were Louie Jago, Natalie Hogan, Gemma Robinson, Naomi Wojcik, sports tutor Sarah Sildatki, and construction tutor Grahame Dale.

A head shave event was also organised by sport students Lee Harkin, Marcus Robinson, Cory Brand and Daniel Walmsley who all lost their locks.

The two activities raised more than £300 and counting to help people living in poverty in the UK and overseas.

Karen Turner, learning enrichment co-ordinator at the college, said: “It was a great effort, they had fundraising ideas and they carried them out.”

The popularity of TV’s The Great British Bake Off, inspired the Channelside college to hold its own culinary contest on Tuesday. The Great Furness College Bake Off saw staff, including principal Anne Attwood, bake and design cupcakes.

The cakes, in the form of animal, cappuccino cup and butterfly designs, went on sale to the college community. There was a queue of people outside the kitchens, and all the treats were snapped up in just 10 minutes, raising more than £220.

The winning baker was Barry Atkinson, a health and social care lecturer, and a nurse at Risedale at St Cuthbert’s Nursing Home, who created lemon cupcakes with toasted poppy seeds. Second was Furness training apprentice, Hannah Priestley-Jukes, and third was functional skills lecturer, Vanessa Beauman.

All week, youngsters at Happy Tots Day Nursery, in Barrow, have held sponsored dance-a-thon sessions.

The two to four-year-olds have been dancing along to upbeat music and also baking and selling cakes.

Tots who were too young for the dancing made hand prints. All the events are expected to raise more than £150.
