Son’s anger as parents’ memorial plaque is stolen

A MAN who went to mark the anniversary of his father’s death at a Barrow cemetery was horrified when he found a memorial plaque to his parents had been stolen.
The plaque – laid in memory of Barrovians Eileen and George Troth – was one of 121 stolen from a memorial wall near Thorncliffe Crematorium over the Jubilee weekend.
Their grandson Craig Troth bought the plaque as a Christmas present for his family after Mrs Troth, who was in her 80s, died in August last year.
George Troth, a professional sprinter and well-known rugby player in Cumbria during his lifetime, died aged 64, 25 years ago.
His son, Graham Troth, discovered the theft when he went to visit the plaque to mark the anniversary of his dad George’s death on Sunday.
Craig Troth, from Holbeck, said: “It affected dad a bit on the day, as it would.
“You don’t think that anyone would even think about doing that.
“It isn’t worth a lot, about £140, I bought it as a present for my family as something to remember my grandparents by.”
He believed the plaque had not been damaged and had been returned to the crematorium by police so it could be put back on the memorial wall.
Mr Troth, who turned 25 on Thursday, said: “It is quite a good birthday present to have it back in one piece.”
The plaques were recovered by police in Barrow on Wednesday.
Two Barrow men, aged 30 and 39, have been arrested and bailed on suspicion of burglary and theft.
They have also been arrested in connection with the burglary of a number of items from the house of a 90-year-old woman in Undergreens Road, Barrow.
The men have been bailed until June 27.
Anyone who thinks they may have seen any suspicious vehicles or people near the cemetery over the Jubilee weekend, or believes a plaque commemorating one of their relatives has been stolen, is asked to contact Barrow CID on 101.

After staying with my daughter for a few days i returned home to be told by my husband he'd read online in the Evening Mail about the theft of the memorial plaques which had been stolen from the crematorium.After a sleepless night,we travelled through to Barrow from our home in Bolton le Sands on Saturday to see if our beloved son's plaque was still there.Thankfully it was but my heart goes out to those who were'nt as fortunate as us.I can only imagine what they are going through & i hope those who were responsible for this vile act will be punished accordingly.Julie McAllister.

To anon: The Big Deal about two police officers walking down Dalton Road, is that it is more usual to see PO's in patrol cars, rather than pounding the beat.
I am not being sarcastic, merely saying it as it is. I am all for not cutting back on Police force as I believe it's an open invitation for criminals to commit crimes. If you view my Facebook page you will note I have commented on such travesty's by Ozzie Osbourne.
It appears to me that you read and picked up on one small point. This was NOT the main context.
