Sellafield becomes latest Cumbria fostering friendly employer

SELLAFIELD Ltd is the latest employer to sign up to Cumbria County Council’s Fostering Friendly Employer initiative.

Sellafield Ltd’s commitment brings the number of Cumbrians working for a fostering friendly employer to 21,000, almost 10 per cent of the entire working population in the county.

Since the launch in February, the council’s campaign has seen a steady stream of employers signing up to the initiative.

The scheme is working to increase the number of staff who, with the support of their employer, are able to balance their work and look after Cumbria’s most vulnerable children.

In Cumbria, there are more than 600 children placed in foster care.

The council wants employers to come forward and implement changes as part of their corporate social responsibly to help support its work to recruit more foster carers.

The scheme asks for companies to recognise the needs of foster carers in employment policies, and help celebrate fostering.

Councillor Geoff Cook, chairman of Cumbria County Council, said: “I would first like to thank Sellafield Ltd; we are absolutely delighted that they have chosen to join our Fostering Friendly Employer scheme.

“As one of the biggest employers in Cumbria their involvement is significant. I think it sets a great example to other local employers and I hope more will follow their lead. This is a great example of a company taking its role in the community seriously.”
