School pupils get a taste of Barrow teacher’s challenge

A TEACHER will have the support of her entire school tomorrow when she tackles the London Marathon.
Yarlside Primary School teacher Louise Knipe will be among the thousands of entrants in the world famous endurance challenge.
The Year One teacher has been training all year and aims to finish inside four hours and raise £2,012 for school playground equipment.
Miss Knipe has been sponsored by school staff, and parents were asked to sponsor or pledge a contribution.
Headteacher Janine Pierce said the entire school was proud of Miss Knipe and would be tuning into BBC1 hoping to catch a glimpse of her.
She will wear a special vest, bearing the school logo and “Go Miss Knipe” on the back, which has been donated by Identity, of Cavendish Street, Barrow.
Mrs Pierce said: “She is part of a running club, but her maximum run she used to do, mainly for fitness and enjoyment, is six or seven miles.
“But the opportunity to enter the marathon came up and she has been training for the last four months.
“She has run after work and through the dark winter nights since she started in January.
“Then on the Saturday after we broke up for the Easter holidays, she did her last big run, which was 22 miles.”
Yesterday the 220 children at the school ran their own sponsored combined marathon on the school playing field.
The infants were asked to run at least 0.1 miles and the juniors 0.2 miles.
Mrs Pierce said: “We explained to the children in assembly, and the juniors especially, if they do their 0.2 miles, at that point Miss Knipe will still have 26 miles to go, because a marathon is actually 26.2 miles.
“We showed them the map of the marathon and looked at the age range of the people who take part and the reasons why. We’re all very proud of her and are fully backing her.”
