Santa left a rock among Barrow man's spuds

A ROOSE resident had a Christmas dinner to remember for all the wrong reasons after narrowly avoiding serving a rock to his guests.

Christopher Oliver was busy preparing a sumptuous meal on Christmas Day when he realised he was washing a large stone rather than a potato.

The intruder was in a £6.95 bag of spuds purchased from Morrisons in Barrow and made for some interesting dinner table conversation among the assembled.

The 35-year-old said he could not believe his eyes when he saw the dirt-covered specimen he was about to clean and boil in a saucepan was a stone.

“Santa left me a rock for Christmas,” he quipped. “I know there’s a credit crunch, but by God that’s ridiculous.

“I went and did my shopping on December 23 and didn’t open them until Christmas Day. I just couldn’t believe it.”

Mr Oliver contacted Morrisons after Christmas and a staff member instructed him to bring the rogue rock into the store.

“I’ve filled out a customer complaint form and I have to bring it in to the store so they can analyse it,” he said.

“They call it a ‘foreign body’.”

While the incident prompted plenty of mirth, Mr Oliver said he felt he had no choice but to report it in an attempt to ensure it did not happen to anyone else.

“Of course it’s a health issue,” he said. “At the end of the day, Morrisons is meant to be a high-standard supermarket for food and merchandise.

“What if I had of just rinsed this and put it straight into a pot or roasted it? It’s not really good enough.”

A spokeswoman for Morrisons said the wet weather over summer meant British-grown potatoes were coated with thicker mud than normal, making sorting difficult.

“This sounds a very unusual case and our technical team are keen to take a look at it and report back to Mr Oliver,” she said.

its a health issue!?

ok spuds are grown in the ground so they need to be washed before cooking.

im guesing most people will be able to tell the difference between a tatty an a stone (as you did). if people cant tell the difference between a stone an spud then they have "issues"

so where is the health issue?

smells of compo claim to me
