As part of our month-long ‘Scoop the Poop’ campaign, we asked our readers to name their dog fouling hot spots.
Droves of readers have been in touch and their hot spots have been registered on an interactive map on our website. So far the map has had nearly 300 views, with 54 sites nominated as a dog fouling problem zone.
Areas including Salthouse Road, Roose Road, both Barrow, and Amphitrite Street and Sandy Gap Lane, on Walney, have been nominated along with Hart Street and Church Walk, in Ulverston, and Little Fields Lane, in Dalton.
The Evening Mail has been giving out free poo bags this week, donated by Barrow Borough Council.
The poo bags are being given away with a copy of the paper from our street vendors or from the Abbey Road office.
Bev Hammond, Evening Mail newspaper sales manager, said the scheme had received a good response so far.
She said: “The bags have been really popular with readers in Barrow town centre, some returning for more the following day. The vendors will continue to give them away over the Easter weekend, while stocks last.
“The Abbey Road office reception has had customers calling in and inquiring about them too.
“All in all, I would say it has been a great success.”
l A third fine in as many months has been issued to an irresponsible dog owner.
A man was slapped with a £75 fixed penalty after letting his dog foul in the back street of Carr Lane, Walney.
The Barrow Borough Council Streetcare team issued the man with the fine at around 11am on Wednesday.
The fine is the third issued since March 5.
