AN investigation has been launched following the death of a crew member who fell while working on a floating hotel off the Cumbria coast.
The unnamed male was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
Cumbria police are looking into the incident.
C-Bed – the firm that runs the ship – say they are not ruling out any possibilities that may have led to his death.
Health and Safety investigators are also looking into the circumstances and making inquiries.
Liverpool Coastguard were called to an incident onboard Wind Perfectionfor, a floating hotel for the Walney offshore windfarm contractors, at around 2.30pm on Saturday.
The volunteer crew of Barrow’s RNLI station launched their all-weather lifeboat at 2.56pm to stand by an accommodation vessel, which was 15 miles out in the Irish Sea, while the RAF helicopter took the casualty to Royal Preston Hospital. He later died.
The man’s family have been informed and he is not believed to have been local.
A spokesman for Siemens, who supply contractors to the windfarms, said: “We confirm that an incident involving an employee from C-Bed occurred on Saturday March 1 onboard the hotel vessel Wind Perfectionfor.”
Jan Jacobsen from C-Bed, based in the Netherlands, said: “We are fully co-operating with the police and other agencies to find out what happened.
“All we know at the moment is he left his position in the engine room and walked up to the deck and went out onto the Monkey Island (a deck located directly above the navigating bridge of ship) and from there crossed over and fell.
“We are working with the various agencies to establish the exact circumstances and the reason he left his position without permission and went up there.
“It is a very unfortunate incident and we are not excluding any possibility at this time. The crew onboard have been totally cooperative and we are keeping in contact with the energy suppliers and keeping them up to date with our investigation.”
