Probe into use of social media at Haverigg jail

AN investigation has been launched into claims an inmate at HMP Haverigg used a mobile phone in his cell to access social media websites.

An inmate using the profile name Adam Kirby is the fourteenth prisoner discovered by the Evening Mail to be using Facebook to post status updates and pictures of himself while serving time at the prison.

The Ministry of Justice says any prisoner caught using social media websites while in prison will face serious disciplinary consequences.

A Prison Service spokeswoman confirmed it was a criminal offence to have a mobile phone in prison and the service worked hard to prevent mobiles from coming into Haverigg.

She added: “Prisoners have no access to social networking sites such as Facebook while in custody.

“Any prisoner found to be posting pictures or messages to these sites will face serious disciplinary consequences.”
