Police to chat to pub goers in South Cumbria about community policing

COPS will be speaking to pub goers in Dalton and Walney tomorrow as part of a community policing initiative.

Barrow’s Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be speaking to customers at The Vickerstown, in Walney and the Golden Ball, in Dalton between 4pm and 6pm. The aim is for the public to highlight issues they want tackling in their communities so officers can focus on the problems that are most important to local residents.

The initiative has been arranged as part of Cumbria Constabulary’s ‘Community Policing Week’ which runs until Friday.

The purpose of the week-long campaign is to highlight the work that goes on in neighbourhoods across Cumbria 24/7, 365 days a year to keep people safe and reduce levels of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Inspector Ian McClymont said: “We want to reach out to all areas of the community and identify what their policing concerns are. When we carried out a similar exercise in the autumn, the people we spoke to were really positive about the experience and were keen to tell us what concerned them.

“For some, we were able to provide advice or direct them to partner agencies

who could help them further.

“People lead very busy lives and it is often hard for people to get to community meetings that we hold, visit police stations, or join our Web-chats, so by going into new environments where people feel comfortable, we are making sure we make ourselves available to as many people as possible.

“Police officers will be on duty and would welcome as many people as possible to take the opportunity to have a cup of tea and chat about anything that concerns them. Unfortunately – no alcohol will be on offer from us!”
