Police seize suspected drugs haul at Kendal Calling music festival

POLICE seized this haul in an operation to stop drugs getting onto the site of Cumbria’s Kendal Calling music festival.

Suspected cannabis bush, tablets and powders were confiscated as officers issued a warning to anyone thinking of taking drugs into the event, held near Penrith.

Dozens of individual plastic bags containing what is believed to be cannabis bush were among the haul discovered by police in a single seizure at the entrance to the site yesterday morning,

Detectives said all the substances still had to be tested to confirm exactly what they consist of. Officers said they had prevented the substances from getting onto the site.

No details had emerged today on any potential street value. Police said there had been no arrests.

A force spokeswoman said: “Cumbria Police will continue to work with the organisers of Kendal Calling to discourage festival goers from bringing drugs to the event.

“We will continue to target drug use and festival goers may be searched on their way in.

“Those caught with illegal substances will be banned from entering and could face police arrest.”

Kendal Calling starts at Lowther Deer Park today and runs over the weekend. The line-up includes Suede, Example, De La Soul and Happy Mondays.

However, one of the main stage acts has cancelled her performance. Singer Ella Eyre was to perform at the festival tonight but has had to cancel her set due to ill health.

The 19-year-old pop star, who has featured on Rudimental’s number one single Waiting All Night, took to Twitter last night to let fans know her absence was due to doctor’s orders.
