Police reveal latest twist in Ulverston rape investigation

POLICE have renewed their appeal for information more than two months after a teenage girl was raped in Ulverston town centre.

On Monday January 20, a 17-year-old girl went to Barrow police station to report she had been raped in the Market Street area of Ulverston.

The attack happened at around 2.30am on Sunday, January 19.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape shortly after.

He was not charged but was told to answer bail on February 17 at Barrow police station.

But Cumbria police have now confirmed they will not be taking any further action against the man and have urged the public to come forward with any information that may help their investigation.

A police spokesman said: “The 18 year old man from Ulverston who was arrested on suspicion of rape will have no further action taken against him at this time.

“The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police.”

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident to get in touch.

Detectives are asking anyone who was out in Ulverston on the night of Saturday, January 18 and may have been making their way home across Market Street between 1am and 2am, and who may have heard or seen something suspicious, to contact police on 101 and speak to the on-duty sergeant at Barrow CID.

Crimestoppers can also be called anonymously on 0800 555 111.
