Plucky Oscar is a celebrity after jumping from train

A DOG who took a death-defying leap from a moving train is full of life six months on from a potentially fatal accident.

Oscar, the cavalier spaniel, leapt from a moving train near Manchester in June to the horror of his owner Matthew Turnbull, of Castlewray, Broughton.

After running down the carriage and leaping out of an open train window, Oscar’s tail was caught by the train as he went under it.

At first Mr Turnbull feared Oscar was dead and he ran along the railway line to find his beloved pet, who had taken sanctuary in a signal box. He was relieved to see a railway worker appear cradling Oscar, who then had emergency surgery.

After an initial spell where Oscar was timid, Mr Turnbull said he was now full of life.

Mr Turnbull, originally from Barrow, said his canine companion had even managed to return to the Canterbury Express, the train where the fateful accident took place, but this time he completed the journey.

He said: “After the accident we went down to Canterbury and he managed to stay on board this time.”

Despite dicing with death Oscar has been unaffected and the popular pooch has received even more attention since his accident.

Mr Turnbull, 37, added: “We’re going to Whitby next month and we get the train to Barrow three times a week and he’s a bit of a celebrity.

“After the article in the paper he was in Chat magazine and people make a real fuss of him when we’re about. It’s amazing – everything now is back to normal and it’s almost as if it never happened.”
