Pleas for police to tackle Barrow boy racers

STREETS are being turned into racetracks by “idiot” drivers putting lives at risk, say Barrow residents.
The Evening Mail has been swamped with messages from Barrow people, complaining of boy racing and speeding in the town, particularly in Abbey Road and Hindpool Road areas.
One reader said: “I live up Hindpool which these idiots use as a race track.
“Unfortunately Napier Street / Nelson Street backstreet hasn’t got alley gates so we have cars tearing up the backstreet and using it as a cut through.
“This backstreet is full of children playing and parents with toddlers. I am sick to the back teeth of hearing the blaring music and cars being revved as they park up on pavements as they have a fag and chat with their gang.
“Better policing and more patrols are needed to get them off the roads and streets.”
Referring to police stop and check operations on nearby roads one reader said: “Instead of stopping pensioners and people on their way home from a hard day’s graft in the yard with their daft vehicle checks, Cumbria police should station themselves on Abbey Road most evenings and record the madness that unfolds as the boy racers emerge.”
Another said: “Boy racers are an absolute nuisance. They drive around showing off, thinking they are clever when all they are doing is putting everyone at risk they should have their cars and their licences taken off them. Why haven’t they got anything better to do?”
Others called for speed cameras to be installed on the affected roads, or for Abbey Road to be returned to a single lane layout in some areas to discourage “racing”.
A police spokeswoman said officers were aware of the concerns of people living in the area.
She said: “A marked roads policing vehicle has been parked in various locations along Abbey Road periodically throughout the day and the area is also an attention site for the mobile speed camera vans.”

My neighbour sits her three year old daughter on her knee while she drives in our street and lets her daughter steer the car.

Have your say
Phil and jack do make valid points.
The young are too quick and aggressive and lack experience and do not want to be told that their driving is of a poor standard. The majority think they are the best driver on the road. The old are too slow both at the wheel and of mind and have no reactions and cannot see very well and have poor body movement. Through no fault of their own I might add. It is an observation not a criticism.Somewhere down the middle of these people are the really good drivers. The middle aged are experienced enough, respect life and still have the reactions and sight to be competent at driving. It is the middle aged that will have the least accidents. Does someone want to check the stats and tell me if i am wrong.Generally speaking i think
