Parking fears raised about Ulverston homes scheme

PLANS for nine new homes in Ulverston have been given a provisional thumbs up.

Outline planning permission was granted for the proposal on the corner of Victoria Road and Alexander Road in the town on Wednesday.

Members of South Lakeland District Council’s planning committee agreed to allow the former Atkinson Body Repair building to become a residential site at their meeting in Kendal. They were told three of the homes will be designated as affordable.

The building, which sits in the south Ulverston conservation area, will be demolished to make way for the new development.

Ulverston councillor Janette Jenkinson welcomed affordable homes for the town but had some reservations. She said: “The town council were concerned about the first application for this site, as were the neighbours, as they felt it to be over intensive.

And I think there should be no more than nine units on this site.”

Cllr Jenkinson added: “This is a town centre site but car parks are quite a way away so parking is going to be an issue here as well.”

The outline plans for the site include 14 car parking spaces. But Councillor Sylvia Emmott said she feared this would not be enough to stop vehicles spilling onto the street. She told the committee: “I want to see more than 14 spaces, I would prefer 18 so that there’s two per unit.”

The plans will now be developed further with detailed proposals being submitted for consideration by the planning committee in the coming months.
