Prime Spring Lambs/Hoggs
ULVERSTON held a special show and sale of a single spring lamb. Over thirty entries were forward for judging and many thanks go to the judge Mr Ian Brown, Lindal for doing such a marvellous job.
After much thought he placed the awards as follows 1 S G Benson, Horrace; 2 A and C Park, Sea View; 3 A and C Park, Sea View.
First prize was deservedly awarded to S G Benson, of Horrace, being an outstanding 44kg Charolais which went on to realise the top price per kilo and pounds per head reaching 265.91ppkg or £117 being purchased by local butcher, N and S Rhodes Quality Butchers of Barrow, ensuring local produce is sourced and continues to be local. Mr Stephen Benson was presented with the J Capstick Trophy by the Judge Mr Ian Brown in the ring.
Prime Cattle/OTM Cattle
A good entry forward of prime cattle met a brisk trade with averages reaching 188.79ppkg for Steers, 199.38ppkg for heifers and 180.00ppkg for bulls. Top price on the day realised 218.50ppkg (£1140.57) for a tremendous 522kg Limousin shown by E Bilsborough, Moor Green being purchased by P Smith, Penrith. Top price steer reached 199.50ppkg (£1193.01) for a remarkable 598kg Limousin exhibited by JR Bowes, Sheep Parks being purchased by N and S Rhodes, Quality Butchers of Barrow. Bulls topped at 180.50ppkg for a strong 638kg Blonde D’Aquitaine shown by M/s Rothery, New Hall being purchased by T Postlethwaite and Co, Urswick.
Dairy, Beef Breeding, Calves and Store Cattle
An excellent entry forward saw trade being buoyant as in previous weeks. Dairy cows met an excellent trade with the top being £2,100 for a very good Holstein Friesian heifer exhibited by R Morris-Eyton, Beckside.
Cast Ewes/Rams
Still a very good number coming forward weekly sees trade being just as good as previous weeks with an average of £78.10. All types and breeds sold well to a crowded ringside. Top price on the day reached a remarkable high of £143 for Suffolks exhibited by N Hornby, Bowesfield being purchased by M Lomax Ltd, Milnthorpe.
