Yarlside Nursery and Primary School, in Barrow, is the first Furness school to be awarded Ofsted’s top grade of outstanding in every category, under the new framework introduced in September.

The Red Oak Avenue school was inspected on January 9, at the start of the new term, with notice being given the afternoon before the visit.

Ofsted said the headteacher, Janine Pierce, led the school with “contagious enthusiasm and commitment” and had “vigorous support of all staff.” The report said: “The resolute leadership of the school is untiring in striving for the best.”

Governance is described as “exceptionally diligent.”

Mrs Pierce said: “We are all extremely proud. I’d like to thank the staff and governors for their hard work and commitment, the parents for their support, and our pupils who take a real sense of pride in their school.”

Ofsted highlighted that in 2012 the national assessment scores of the Year Two pupils showed they were more than half a year ahead of what was general expected, and that they made “excellent progress.”

Inspectors also praised the results in English and maths for last year’s Year Six pupils, which showed their progress from age seven was in the top two per cent nationally.

The report said: “Progress in lessons is excellent and pupils’ books show impressive learning over time. All pupils do equally well.”

The education watchdog found that in half the lessons seen, teaching was of the highest quality, and many more had outstanding features. No teaching was less than good. Pupils “greatly enjoy learning,” “respect their teachers” and “appreciate the interesting lessons.”

The pupils were congratulated as “unfailingly courteous, considerate of others and diligent, ” and developing “maturity beyond their years.”

Mrs Pierce said the school would not rest on its laurels and would strive to keep improving.
