Offenders pitch in to help with Barrow nursery revamp work

A BARROW nursery has had a revamp thanks to local fundraisers and a team of offenders.
Initial quotes said that the cost of bringing Yarlside Nursery up to scratch would cost about £45,000.
Fundraiser Mark Gibbons, of Salthouse Road, Barrow, said they managed to do it for half of that amount, thanks to volunteers and generous donations.
The father of three, aged 31, had his youngest daughter at the Redoak Avenue nursery until last month, when she started in reception.
He said: “It needed a complete refurbishment because it was so run down.
“We started fundraising in January with several events – and we managed to do it for half the cost and the help of the Payback team. They did all the labour for free.
“The nursery is fantastic and we just wanted to help bring it up to scratch. We had a substantial donation from Walney Wind Farms, which paid for new windows and doors.
“ It has been a big challenge and we have been up against time but it’s all done now.
“It looks absolutely fantastic. The commitment and skill of the Payback team amazed me.
“I would recommend any community groups or schools who need help to approach them.”
Nursery manager Claire Metcalfe said they were extremely grateful to everyone who had helped.
She said they had now extended the nursery hours and would be open between 8am and 5pm during term time and the cost would be £3 an hour.
Mrs Metcalfe said: “I want to thank everyone who has donated or helped us out.
“At our Fab 40 event we had donations of £500 from Glaxo, Kimberly Clark, Red Evolution and Dong. We also had an anonymous donation of £250.”
