New domestic abuse scheme is put to test in Barrow
Last updated at 13:26, Monday, 18 January 2010
A SERVICE which offers a lifeline to victims of domestic violence is being piloted in Barrow.
Home visits are now being offered to female victims of violence through the South Cumbria Domestic Violence Floating Support team, provided by supported housing provider Stonham.
The confidential service is being piloted for 12 months.
A qualified project worker can provide support for up to 10 women.
Funding for the home visits is being provided by the government’s Supporting People programme.
Women can be referred to the service through Barrow Borough Council, Cumbria police and the probation service. Referrals can also come through domestic abuse service SAFE, based in Barrow’s NSPCC centre, which is due to close in March.
Dawn Sandham, Stonham service manager, said: “Many women have come to us following years of being in bad relationships where their former partner has totally controlled their lives.
“This means the women are often totally lacking in self-confidence and esteem.
“Once they are living in safe accommodation, we visit them on a weekly basis to provide help with things like budgeting, how to pay utility bills and introducing them to social groups where they can make new friends.
“Our service is open to any women aged over 16 years old and is totally discreet and confidential.
“Domestic violence represents 14 per cent of all reported violent crime in Cumbria and the service currently has increased capability to help more women and their children escape violent partners.”
