Landlady of Barrow pub calls time

THE landlady of a Barrow pub and hotel is calling time so she see the rest of the world.

Caron Challinor, 49, is packing her bags after spending the past four years running The George on Walney.

She has already seen a lot of countries, and now she would like to see the rest of them.

And her latest globetrotting will help her decide which country she wants to live out her days in.

Mrs Challinor has a holiday home in France near Limoges, which also has a letting cottage in the grounds.

And she and one of her relatives have also invested in building land in part of Romania, where they hope to develop a housing estate of 18 houses when the international financial situation is healthy again.

Mrs Challinor, who is going globetrotting on her own, says: “It probably a little bit more scary as you get older, but I am looking forward to it.”

Running The George, where she has made lots of friends, is just one of several businesses she has run, including Amigos Mexican and Steak House in Cavendish Street, Ulverston, which she ran with a friend for nine years before moving on.

She says her first business came after she looked to leave home as a girl and buy a home and found to her annoyance she could not afford any of the houses on sale.

One of her brothers then offered to buy a house jointly with her.

“I said ‘If you do that I will turn it into a B&B and it will do really well.’”

The Harrison Street B&B could take 13 guests and was nearly always full with contractors.

One of her brothers has a plumbing business, and the other owned Amigos before he sold it to her. Of running a business, she said: “I enjoy it. I don’t think I could work for anybody now. I am too used to my own world.”

Of the next adventure with a suitcase she said: “I have done a lot of travelling. I just want to see the places I have never been too.

“I reckon I have seen two thirds of the world by now. The only place I have really not enjoyed is Portugal. Don’t ask me why. It was probably just a bad holiday.

“I will probably bod about on my own, but I have got friends in Australia and friends in Egypt.”

She hails from Manchester, but came to Barrow when her father got a job at the shipyard.

She loves Barrow but says the English weather means it’s not where she wants to finally hang her hat.

She says of abroad: “I love eating out and beaches and stuff. I feel our weather lets us down.”

Her friend Lisa Gavin is taking over the licence of The George, which is owned by Enterprise Inns and includes eight letting bedrooms.

Caron said: “I liked Walney and I ended up at the George. I have enjoyed it while I have been here. Everyone has really been friendly.”
