Stevenson hearing

A GP who killed a grandmother with an overdose injected a different patient with six times the correct dose of painkiller, a hearing was told.

Dr Michael Stevenson, 57, from Bootle, was spared jail when he admitted the manslaughter of Marjorie Wright in January 2005.

The family GP accidentally gave Mrs Wright a 30mg dose of diamorphine instead of 5mg, failed to monitor her reaction to the drug and left to attend another call.

She was found dead when police broke into her home shortly after.

Yesterday, a General Medical Council disciplinary hearing was told another patient in Dr Stevenson’s care suffered a respiratory arrest on the same day when he administered 30mg of diamorphine hydrochloride, rather than the intended dose of 5mg.

The hearing continues today.
