New roofs for 30 homes in £280k improvement scheme for Barrow

AN entire Barrow estate is set to get brand new roofs due to a problem with nail rot.

Barrow Borough Council is set to spend around £280,000 on replacing them across all 30 council homes on the Devonshire estate in Ormsgill.

The council had already agreed a scheme to re-point and re-render the homes on the estate to fix ongoing problems.

But when carrying out an inspection to gauge the extent of the work, officers found a new problem with nail rot which is affecting the original slate roof covering, which is around 90 years old.

Council housing manager Colin Garnett said in his report for the housing management forum meeting in Barrow Town Hall on Thursday that the work could be carried out before March 31 next year, via the Cumbria Housing Partners framework, for an extra £280,000.

Councillor Bill McEwan, who represents Ormsgill tenants on the forum, welcomed the news.

He said: “That’s fantastic, because if they are 90 years old, there has been some bad winters over the years and this will really help to keep them more insulated. It’s fantastic news.

“It’s good for the condition of the stock as well and I am really chuffed that they are going to do this.

“It’s progress going forward, because we’re always saying that the houses are going down and they are not getting enough done to them.

“So this is a step forward and I’m very surprised and absolutely over the moon with that.”

Mr Garnett recommended the members of the forum to vote in favour of the scheme, using any surplus budget in the housing revenue account.

If there is not enough under-spend in the maintenance investment programme, he recommended using money from the housing revenue account reserves.

The forum will meet in the town hall at 2pm on Thursday.

Have your say

you got your calculations wrong ask any roofer just under 10k a roof.feel there is something fishy going on. are they getting done in gold leaf i wonder .just had a drive to look most off the slate tiles great condition only nails gone feel could be used again as slate will sell for more than what is going to replace.if i get slates slipping on my do to nails i get no where near on insurance to the tune of 10k to re-nail mine.back hands again.

Are these repairs going to be carried by local firms & workers or is this another contract going out to tender to outsiders only ?
