Robbers assaulted a shopkeeper before making off with his takings in what police believe was a targeted attack.

The 61-year-old had parked his van in Gower Street, near to Maxwell Drive, in the south side of Glasgow when he was attacked on Saturday.

Police said he was collecting an item from the side door of the van when two men approached him from behind.

A struggle took place and he was struck repeatedly on the face and body before being knocked to the ground.

The suspects stole his black jacket, containing a four-figure sum of shop takings, and his mobile.

The made off along Gower Street towards Sherbrooke Drive.

Their victim went home where his family called the police, who are appealing for information.

Both suspects are Asian and between 20 and 30 years old.

One is 6ft tall, clean shaven and was wearing a grey and black tracksuit while the other is 5ft 6in tall, slim with dark hair and was wearing a grey tracksuit.

Both men were wearing dark footwear.

Detective Constable Emma Laurie said: “The victim owns a shop in the area and we believe that the despicable individuals responsible have targeted him specifically, in the hope he would be carrying a significant sum of cash.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the surrounding area on Saturday night and may have noticed two men matching the above descriptions, or anything at all suspicious, to please come forward.”
