Mystery saviour offers Barrow school last-minute deal

A MYSTERY investor – backed by local business owners – has thrown a threatened school a survival lifeline.

Have your say

Is that with or without the RN's Childrens Education Allowance of up to six grand a term?

John, people are not saying that Chetwynde parents work hard but if you have 2 children there you must be paying at least £15,000. That's a lot of money, some people don't even make that in a year. So I would put you slightly higher than 'working class'. This is why the school is struggling to attract new children from Barrow - people don't have that sort of money spare.

Wonderful news. I'm overjoyed that Chetwynde is going to be saved for the time being, it is a wonderful school. I have many a fond memory of my time there, as do my four children, two nephews and one niece who are currently attending the school.

My 2 children go to chetwynde so obviously i am over the moon it is staying open , but i am also glad it is staying open just to shut up some of the comments on here i am in the royal navy and my wife works bloody hard we are both working class people, i was brought up on one of the biggest council estates in Europe so all this stuff about horray henrys and straw boater brigade do me a favour. I have recently being reading all the comments about many articles in this paper and all the majority of comments are putting people down what is up with people spending their hard earned money where they want

Thats right RW, another week of indecision. Better that than forward plan for your child's education, best leave till the last moment...

You Chetwynde parents are just clutching at straws and putting off the inevitable I'm afraid. It's all about social standing and trying to impress each other, not what is best for the kids in the long run.
Get into the real world. Yes, it's a reprieve but for how long? Why invest money in a businees which doesn't actually work? Throwing good money after bad so you can impress your golf club friends, I don't doubt?
Either you radically change the structure of the place (including the staffing salaries and ratios etc) and exclude kids whose parents don't pay a year in advance, or it is doomed.
Any charity money going around should be invested in the schools and children who actually really need it, in the deprived areas, not go towards the straw-boater brigade

Is this really fair on the Local Education Authority or the children?
Presumably these schools need to organise classes, lessons etc.
Although this is probably a reprieve for the school it is something of a slap in the face for schools trying to prepare for the next school year.

But Remploy gets closed down, without so much as a whimper. Public services are yet to receive the worst of the 'cuts'. All the while A rich Backer supports a School for Rich people, and BAE makes more bombs. Who knew? *cue applause* Well done.

Local secondary schools have already expended much time trying to pick up the pieces from the Chetwynde fallout. The sooner this matter is resolved the better.

Last minute offers of salvation are all very well but this has been a roller-coaster of a term for parents, pupils and staff-all the signs are there that it is unviable on its current numbers but always that promise of being saved, its no wonder parents are confused as what to do for the best. Just how many more meetings are ther going to be? There is the danger that this gets dragged out and starts to look like a self-serving minority grabbing at straws.
