Miss South Lakes contestants dress up to raise money for charity

CONTESTANTS in the Miss South Lakes competition have been getting dressed up to raise funds for the Variety Club Children’s Charity in the run-up to the final – in their pyjamas and a dress made out of recycled newspapers.

Vicki Lopez, a trainee nursery nurse at Hollingarth nursery in Barrow, organised a teddy bears’ picnic at the nursery as one of a number of community fundraising events.

The 19 year-old said: “I wanted to involve the whole community. One of the things I did was a teddy bears’ picnic with the children.”

She said the children, aged three to four, came in to the nursery in their pyjamas in support of the charity.

She said: “The children loved it. They even brought their own teddy bears from home.”

She said the nursery charity day was a success and added: “We raised £45 at the picnic.”

Miss Lopez hasn’t stopped at one event, however, and also organised a sponsored “Onesy Walk” down Abbey Road, with people wearing the all-in-one adult romper suits raising more than £250.

Another of the 22 finalists, Kayleigh Brown, has been embracing her creative and spooky side in the name of charity.

The 15-year-old entrant in the junior section of the event made a dress for the Eco category of the competition out of old Advertiser newspapers.

She said that she used to deliver the Advertiser and said: “I had a few spares, so I made a skirt and a headband out of them.”

Kayleigh is also getting involved with the Spooky Tours at Barrow Town Hall from October 23-27.

Miss Brown said: “I’m going for acting training with Cast Youth Theatre for my role on October 21.”

Miss Brown will be involved in three sessions a day.

She said: “Part of the ticket money will go to the Variety Club Children’s Charity.”
