COUNCILLORS paid tribute to a former Barrow mayoress who died yesterday.
It is understood that Eleanor Murphy collapsed at work after complaining she felt unwell.
According to a statement made at the start of a borough council meeting yesterday, Mrs Murphy – lady mayoress during Councillor John Murphy’s tenure as mayor from 2011 to 2012 – was taken to Furness General Hospital after she began to feel ill.
Police contacted Cllr Murphy and took him to the hospital but his wife had died before he arrived.
Barrow Borough Council leader Councillor Dave Pidduck proposed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect at the beginning of the council’s executive committee meeting at Barrow Town Hall.
During her time as mayoress she attended 354 engagements with her husband and helped play a vital role in Cllr Murphy’s fundraising.
Throughout Cllr Murphy’s year in office Mrs Murphy was ever-present and enjoyed her civic duties, which ranged from visiting schools to helping raise awareness of the defibrillator fundraising campaign.
Cllr Murphy and his wife organised and attended scores of events to help raise money to install defibrillators across Barrow – a campaign which raised a total of £40,000.

Have your say
So sad Eleanor was a lovely lady. Thoughts go to the family.
