AN “oddball” stalker from Millom has been jailed after a “devastating” campaign of harassment.
Michael John Paley was yesterday sentenced to 26 weeks in jail by magistrates.
Paley, 49, of Salthouse Road, Millom, appeared by videolink from HMP Preston at Furness Magistrates’ Court.
On three occasions between January 9 and February 17 last year, the defendant was spotted lurking in the lane behind Sally Carter’s home in Steel Green, Millom, wearing tiny shorts and a vest top.
Despite being found guilty of stalking following a trial on May 14, the court heard Paley still believes he has not committed an offence.
Mr Andy Gallagher, defending, told the court: “Mr Paley still denies the offence.”
Paley was found guilty of stalking Mrs Carter, a nurse, after she reported him to social services about an allegation which was later found to be unsubstantiated.
At a previous hearing Paley was described as an “oddball” by Mrs Carter and the court was told he had lived with his mother at their Salthouse Road home until she was taken into care. The prosecution said they had no further information to offer following the previous hearing.
Paley was handed a 26-week jail sentence.
He has already served three weeks after being jailed for a breach of bail conditions after writing a blog post about his trial.
Mr Gary Ormondroyd, presiding magistrate, said: “This case has had a devastating impact on the victim and her family and it gives the court no option but to impose a custodial sentence.
“We’ve read in detail the victim impact statement from Mrs Carter. It’s our duty to punish you for your actions and to protect the Carter family from any further consequences.
“The lengthy period of time, the frequency and impact of your contact on the victim led us to increase your sentence.”
Magistrates imposed an indefinite restraining order banning Paley from contacting Sally Carter and Clive Carter. He has been ordered not to mention them on his website or enter into an exclusion zone around the Carter family’s home in Steel Green.
