Black Combe Country Fair

HUNDREDS of people turned out to celebrate country traditions at a south Copeland show.

Foxhounds, Lakeland terriers and whippets were among the attractions at the Black Combe Country Fair on Bank Holiday Monday.

The fair took place in Bootle and saw plenty of punters pack the show field to witness Morris dancing, a fly-fishing competition, Cumberland wrestling and a performance from Cleator Brass.

Elsewhere visitors could sample free range pork or pick up some homemade cakes to take home for tea.

Proceeds from the show were donated to help pay for the upkeep of Black Combe Beagles.

Following a washout for Broughton and Millom Agricultural Show on Saturday organisers were relieved the rain cleared up long enough for the show to get under way on Monday.

Chairman of show Graham Dicker said: “We had an amazing turn out. As far as the vintage cars are concerned we expected a few but got quite a lot. We’ve been heavily supported by the terrier and lurchers and there were more than 40 stall holders.

“After what happened at Broughton we’ve been lucky, but it was very sad to see – everyone in the show community knows each other. It’s been a very successful show.”

Brian White attended the show with his wife Barbara.

He said: “This is our first time here. I saw the advertisement in the Evening Mail and thought I would bring my 1954 Austin.

“It’s a nice run out – the Lakes are too busy on a bank holiday and this has been really good fun.

“I’m really impressed with it – there’s a lot to see and do.”

Mrs White said: “It was a really nice run out. It’s been a great day.”

Julie Norman picked up the prize for best Lakeland Terrier bitch.

She said: “I show dogs quite often.

“I was here last year and picked up the same prize but that dog got third this year.

“It’s a good show and there’s a lot of people here.”
