The Big Clean 2016 campaign will join forces with the council once more to continue their mission to clean up our beloved beaches and banks.

SOUTH Walney councillors will be teaming up with residents for stage two of a community clean-up.

In early May Labour councillors Helen Wall, Colin Thomson and Frank Cassidy organised a litter-pick along the grassy banks of Walney Channel opposite the King Alfred pub. A great deal of litter was collected on the day with residents joining the councillors and even some younger children coming along to help out.

However, the task proved more gargantuan than first expected and Cllr Cassidy decided that the clean may have to be continued at a future date in order to make a clean sweep of the area. Cllr Cassidy said: “We made a good start in May, but there is still lots of litter and rubbish tangled in the undergrowth and we are ready to get stuck in again."

The councillors have now earmarked Friday (August 5) at 6pm as the date and time of their next mission and residents who want to join them are asked to meet on the Promenade across the road from the King Alfred pub.

“Our friends are spreading the word on social media, and anyone who lives nearby and wants to help will be made welcome. The banking is steep and quite mucky, so volunteers should be physically fit and it’s a good idea to wear old clothes and have suitable footwear.

“People quite like rolling up their sleeves in a common cause, it will help to improve the area and everyone will be made welcome.”

Other local councillors are expected to join the effort and Barrow Borough Council’s Streetcare team is providing shovels, gloves, plastic bags and litter-picking sticks.

The clean-up will go ahead only if the weather is fine and anyone needing more information should call Cllr Cassidy on 0797 407 8814 or to get involved in the Big Clean campaign please contact gabrielle.rowley@nwemail.co.uk.
