A GROUP set up in the wake of flash flooding has urged anyone affected to seek help.

The Millom and Haverigg Flood Support Group was established after the town was devastated by heavy rain last month.

Made up of local volunteers and town councillors, the group is hoping to safeguard the community and prevent similar problems in the future.

Jenny Brumby, one of the organisers, said: "Our community should be very proud of themselves. They've been checking on friends and neighbours since the flood.

"We will be there as a support group until the last person is back in their home.

"I'd also like to thank all our volunteers and helpers, some of whom have been working 12 hours each day.

"Copeland MP Trudy Harrison has been on hand every day helping her constituents and a great support."

The group has called on those affected to reach out.

Mrs Brumby said: "We feel we still haven't heard from all the affected people, which is a great worry.

"We need as many people as possible to come and register that you've been flooded so we can get definitive numbers of properties and businesses and safeguard all members of the community.

"Many people are displaced so if you have any local, rentable properties, please get in touch."

Volunteers from the group will be based at the Tin Chapel over the next week between 10am and 6pm.

The flood support group has also helped set up the Millom Disaster Appeal Fund, with a £5,000 donation from the town council.

Mrs Brumby said: "We've set up a local disaster fund so people can apply for money through the town council.

"The fundraising which is going on is staggering so we thank you all.

"The Millom Pensioners Association has very kindly offered the use of the hall for the support centre.

"We're currently working with a lot of agencies and have got local officials going door to door checking on people."

Fund application forms are available for residents who have registered with the Millom Flood Action Group. Registration forms are available in the library and Tin Chapel.

Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so by post or by visiting the council office or Tin Chapel.

Cheques should be made payable to Millom Disaster Appeal Fund.
