SHOCKING statistics have revealed how hundreds of victims suffered domestic abuse over the course of just one year.

The figures were unveiled as Copeland Borough Council announced the appointment of a dedicated worker to provide crisis support and prevention service to those affected by domestic violence and sexual exploitation.

It comes after Cumbria police attended 1,083 incidents of domestic violence in the borough in 2016/17. Copeland mayor Mike Starkie said the creation of the new specialist prevention and crisis support officer is in "direct response to the figures".

He said: "We are part of a network of support services in Cumbria aimed at tackling domestic violence and sexual exploitation, and we work closely with colleagues in the West Cumbria Community Safety Partnership and through the Copeland Hub."

The figures include 69 incidents in Millom, five in Bootle and three each in Haverigg and Silecroft.

Collaborating with a number of agencies, the worker will ensure vulnerable people can get the housing and support they need.
