A COUNCILLOR is calling for more investment to give an iconic building a new lease of life.

The former Royal British Legion building in Wellington Street, Millom, could be on verge of a bright new future as owners look to sell on the property.

Felicity Wilson, Millom Town Councillor and Copeland Borough Councillor LINDSEY DICKINGS Felicity Wilson, Millom Town Councillor, remembers the club with pride and hopes it can once more become a major part of the community.

She said: "I remember it was a thriving hub of the community and it was very, very popular.

"It's in a key position within the town and it would be great if someone locally could invest in it."

More than 250 Royal British Legion members used to visit the club on a regular basis before it slowly began to be taken over by the rest of the community.

Alarm bells rang when members were reportedly denied access to the club, resulting in a final split which saw the Legion disassociate itself from the premises.

For a number of years members have instead met at The Bear in the Square and continue to be a thriving part of the community.

However, problems have since arisen after the club in Wellington Street became repossessed, bringing to light a new twist in the matter.

It is believed that part of the property was still officially owned by the legion, making it impossible for the building as a whole to be sold on.

Over the next few years, the club changed hands but the section of the club belonging to Legion was never formally sold on or handed over.

The matter only came to light when the building was repossessed and this section of the building needed to be sold in order to sell on the property as a whole.

With the future of the building still in question, Cllr Wilson is urging people to invest in their town.

She said: "We want to see that it thrive and we don't want to see an empty and derelict building - we already have a number of those and it would be shame to see this go."
